Orientation to art

All projects must be completed and the final part of the course will involve producing an exhibition of completed work. All enquiries are treated confidentially. I work from a studio, and the work I produce is concerned with wall mounted constructions which operate somewhere between abstraction and figuration. This means that you will still have the same number of teaching hours, but you will be expected to be in college for longer each day. For complex multi-part works, arrangement and orientation may be known for each of the parts. We chatted to course leader Martin Blake. Opinions about the arrangement of a work may vary, or a work may have been assembled in different ways for different installations. There will also be projects based around visits to local museums and galleries. Sometimes the original arrangement is not known because the work has been dispersed or rearranged. A more detailed description will be necessary to understand how to assemble Claes Oldenburg's Bedroom, for example, than is required to record the relative positioning of the two parts of a Barnett Newman diptych. My own practice lies within Painting which for me began with large scale works which connected with maps and aerial images. For single-part works, noting orientation ensures that the work will be installed appropriately. Orientation and arrangement may also be derived from a direct examination of the work itself. Beginning with basic drawing and observational skills, the coursework will progress through painting and colour theory, life drawing, 3D construction projects, clay and plaster casting, architectural drawing, photomedia and design for the body. We also offer a full range of short courses in all subject areas that are starting soon!
Progress on the course is regularly evaluated through tutorials that are scheduled as part of the timetable. Contact us To register your interest and receive information and updates about studying at UAL, please complete this form.
